Sir Alex Ferguson is the current manager of Manchester United. Before his managing days, he was a striker with several professional teams throughout Scotland. His managing career began in 1974, at the relatively early at the age of 32. Ferguson earned ?40 a week for managing East Stirlingshire. From there he quickly moved up the ranks, joining more prestigious clubs. By 1985 he was chosen as manager of Scotland’s national team.

Fergie’s stint as Scotland’s manager was short lived, as he took over the managerial duties at Manchester United in 1986. It was a slow start, but soon, with Sir Alex at the helm, Man U began to flourish. During his career at Manchester Utd., Ferguson has won the English Premier League eleven times, the League Cup three times, the FA Cup five times, the Champions League twice, and many other various championship wins. In the 1998-99, under his leadership, the Red Devils won the Treble, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League, a feat never accomplished by any other club. He was knighted in 1999 and inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

Man U’s history begins in 1878 when the club was formed, and known then as Newton Heath L&YR F.C., a worker’s football team from Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. In 1902 the team fell into financial turmoil, until a large investment by J.H. Davies, a local brewer, saved the club. They started fresh, with a new name: Manchester United.

Then, in December 1940, it was damaged by a German air raid. Play was temporary moved until the following March, when only a few days later it was bombed a second time, rendering it useless. Man U did not play anymore games at Old Trafford until it was repaired in 1949.

After years of rebuilding and renovation, Old Trafford has become biggest stadium of any English Premier League team, with 76,212 seats. Old Trafford is a 5-star rated, "Elite" UEFA stadium, meaning it meets the high standards of UEFA to hold the Champions League Final.

Since the new beginning in 1902, Man U has had a few struggles, but that is overshadowed by their enormous success.
Between World War I and World War II the team juggled between victory and failure, moving back and forth from the first division to the second division. After WWII, the team has been nothing short of spectacular, being regulated from the top division only once.

Originally known as the Pensioners, Chelsea was formed on March, 14 1905 and was elected to the Football League not long after. Upon their entry into the League, Chelsea’s showings were less than impressive. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that Chelsea became a formidable adversary on the British stage. New manager Ted Drake took over in 1952 and began to transform the team into a version of what we know today. Now known as the Blues, Drake and his new squad won the 1954-55 League Championship, the club’s first major trophy.

Chelsea F.C. has a long and rich history in the realm of English Football. For most of their existence, they have been considered as part of the top-tier of English Football clubs. The New Premier League, founded in 1992, became Chelsea’s home upon its formation. The Blues would not display top form in the league until 1994, when they reached the FA Cup Final. 1996 saw a change for Chelsea as they added accomplished star Ruud Gullit as player-manager. Gullit signed several international players with tremendous talent which allowed the Blues to capture the 1997 FA Cup, firmly establishing them as one of England’s top sides.

Under manager Tommy Docherty, the Blues made formidable runs at trophies throughout the 1960’s but fell short in all but one endeavor, the 1964-65 League Cup. In 1970, Chelsea won the FA Cup over Leeds United and continued their winning ways into the following season, winning the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup over Real Madrid, their first major European honor. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be until the mid-nineties that Chelsea would re-establish its dominance in the football world.

The Blues have played football for over a century and since their inception they have called only one place home, Stamford Bridge. With a bowl-like design and a covered terrace, Stamford Bridge could originally hold approximately 10,000 people. In an attempt to modernize the pitch in the 1970’s, a massive renovation was planned that would turn Stamford Bridge into a more modern 50,000 all-seater stadium. But this plan was stalled due to mounting financial costs. Renovation work continued in the mid-nineties and the plan was back in action.

More recently, after the 2003 sale of the club to Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, the team began to dominate both the English and International stage. Under their new ownership, the Blues spent upwards of 100 million pounds on new talent and a new manager, Jose Mourinho. It was under Mourinho that Chelsea achieved its greatest successes. Chelsea won back to back league championships in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006, becoming only the 5th English team to do so, as well as capturing the 2007 FA and League Cups. Chelsea made it to their first ever UEFA Champions League Final in 2007 under new manager Avram Grant. Since then, Chelsea has continued to play on a high level.
